Are you like me - Do you always have lip balm with you - in the car, in your purse, by your bed?
Do you ask for it for birthdays and Christmas (and actually get excited when you get it)?
If you run out, do you think about it constantly until you can make it to that one store that sells the kind you like? If so, you might be... a lip balm addict. It’s okay to admit it. Who doesn’t love soft, moisturized lips? And who doesn’t love fun, tasty flavors? But... did you know that if you’re using store-bought lip balm, it likely has one or more of these ingredients -
Petroleum products (petrolatum, mineral oil, etc) - can become contaminated during the refining process and contain Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons, which are associated with cancer. It can also make your lips more easily absorb other harmful ingredients, such as the ones below.
Parabens - These are endocrine disruptors that are also associated with cancer. They imitate estrogen in the body, so they’re also harmful to men’s bodies, causing reduced testosterone levels.
Butylated hydroxyanisole/butylated hydroxytoluene (BHA/BHT) - Another endocrine disruptor, these are linked with organ toxicity and respiratory distress.
Fragrances/Flavors - How many times have you seen “Fragrance” or “Natural Flavors” in the ingredients list? It seems harmless enough, but they often contain phthalates, which are hormone disruptors linked with fertility issues in both men and women.
Your lips are fragile, they have a thinner barrier than the rest of your body, they absorb easily. They don’t have as many layers of protection, so we must protect them.
Start reading your lip balm labels. If you noticed that your favorite lip balms have some or all of these ingredients, stop using them. I know, I know. It took you years to find that one, magical brand. Trust me, I’ve had to wean myself off of the one I’ve been using for over 10 years. But YOUR LIPS WILL THANK YOU. And your body will thank you, too!
When you’re ready to break up with your current lip balm and try one with natural, herbal ingredients, hit me up!
